Braving the Hazards: The Pursuit of Survival for Family (2010)

Netaji Ka Bara, in Udaipur District, Rajasthan, houses one of many illegal asbestos mines in the country. Throughout India, it is illegal to extract asbestos. However, it is legal to manufacture products with asbestos. Asbestos is still widely used across India and is part of a huge industry dominated by companies that justify the use of asbestos for affordable roofing.

The asbestos mine at Netaji Ka Bara is the only source of employment, with workers coming from nearby villages. Both adults and children work in the mines without being aware of the dangers of asbestos. Workers put their lives in danger by working in an asbestos mine in order to provide food for their families.

Asbestos mining is an extremely hazardous and life-threatening occupation due to the high risk of exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a toxic material that, when inhaled, can cause serious respiratory illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Miners who work in asbestos mines are exposed to asbestos fibers every day, putting their health at great risk. The long-term health effects of asbestos exposure can be severe and debilitating, often leading to premature death.
